Research area
Microalgae could become a valuable nutrient source for a growing world population. However, currently employed expensive, energy intensive downstream processes call for novel processing concepts. Julia Baumgartner is conducting her doctoral research within a collaborative, interdisciplinary SNF Sinergia project on the downstream processing of microalgae with Pulsed Electric Fields (PEF). Continuous extraction of intracellular compounds and the effect of PEF on microorganism consortia are of central interest.
Julia, born in 1995, received her BSc and MSc in Food Science from ETH Zurich with a focus on food processing and an exchange semester at the Wageningen
University and Research in the Netherlands. After conducting her Master’s thesis on “Simulation-based characterization of a Pulsed Electric Field system” in the Laboratory of Sustainable Food Processing, Julia stayed in the group starting her PhD project in May 2021.
